ABOUT GORGE VIEW SOCIETY

Chown Place is a pocket of tranquility in a busy and frantic world. I find it very peaceful and quiet. We are well looked after and live in nice, well-appointed units. There are activities we can enjoy and one makes friends here easily. I would not want to live anywhere else.
…a recent comment from a resident

The Gorge View Society was created in the mid fifties when a group of concerned members of the United Church of Canada (affiliated with the Victoria Presbytery) saw a need for decent, affordable housing for Seniors living on fixed incomes.

Land was purchased in the 1950’s and the first building was dedicated in 1958. Over the past fifty years, the GVS constructed 16 buildings that 81 bachelor and 18 couples suites—one additional suite is kept as a Guest Suite available for family and visitors.

All units were built and continue to operate without government subsidy or bank loans. New units are built as enough rental income is saved for the next building project. Maintenance of some of our older buildings remains a priority.

Rents are kept low, and there is an income ceiling for both single and couple applicants.

The GVS is rightly proud of the pleasant, pastoral setting of our housing. Each suite has an individual garden which ensures constant colour and seasonal blooms throughout the complex. Common areas are tended to by professional gardeners—while resident assistance is always welcome!

Residents are actively involved in the life of Gorge View Society through the Fellowship Group. (see link)

There is a large Activity Centre on the property, including a Laundry.

Although there is now a need for a part-time Administrator, that hands-on approach continues today, as Board Members continue to be involved with property management and maintenance, admissions, visiting and social activities. In addition, the strong social justice concerns of the United Church of Canada ensures that the GVS will continue to provide a first class service over the next fifty years!
